The last few months of the managing the Field of Dreams.

The FOD Homepage - The FOD Construction -  More FOD Photos - The FOD Last Days

It was an exciting and eventful 4 years from the conception of my idea, the raising the capital, supervising the construction, the opening, the interesting clients and finally the sale to Leno and his Cristals Night Club investors.

Some of my friends and clients having a fun afternoon in the pool.

Just some random photos to let you know what went on here at the Field of Dreams hotel during the last few months before we were able to close the deal with Cristals Night Club.

We were having problems with the Direct TV signals here at the hotel.

I had a guy (Dominican) who had friends (Dominican) in New York who paid for the Direct TV packages and send him the extra cards which he installed with his costumers here. Problem if they don't pay the monthly fee I get cut off.

I've paid for the last two months and have been with out 3 of 4 channels for 6 weeks. Bad for business. I have one client (Paul in New Jersey) who has installed a system and I am depositing the monthly payment in his Alberto account. He'll get 1 card and I get to use 3 here at the hotel.

Here Patrick is throwing Wanda's son, Chino, in to the pool.

Electricity is only on about 12 hours a day in this section. Hope someone can be persuaded to keep it on longer that it is now. A normal Dominican snag came about, that after installing the back up generator we couldn't buy any diesel fuel in the Puerto Plata area. We got some power 2 days ago and we able to accept out first guest.

Johanna, Frank's friend, decorating the pool table in our games room.

One of my return guests, Frank really liked a chica named Johanna. One day whe he took her shopping and to the hair salon he passed out and fell off of the chair. A taxi driver friend of mine took him to the hospital to get checked out. Had a reaction to sugar levels as he had high blood pressure and is a diabetic.

What does he do but come home the next day on the back of her boyfriends motorcycle because she want her boyfriend to make some money. He charged more than the taxi. I wanted to him kill him for being so stupid as to ride back to the hotel on a motoconcho.

Pillin was Alberto's uncle and I enployed him as a favor to Alberto.

Tried to cut back on wages by letting Pillin and Janina have 2 weeks off, without pay of course. Janina wouldn't clean rooms or work after 2pm so she was the logical choice to send home and Pillin doesn't do much of anything after cleaning to pool.

What did they dothey went to the labor board and got me in trouble. I have to pay them anyway or I have to lay them off and pay their liquadation. I made them come in for the weeks wages I owed but I made them sit all day because if they got hurt working I'd have to pay their wages until they got better.

In January 2006, Leno, the owner/manager of Cristals in Puerto Plata.

He approached me with a rental agreement for the hotel which I turned down. Over the next three months we were able come to an agreement for Cristals to rent with option to purchase the hotel.

The sale will close on June 1st, 2007 with Cristals taking over the ownership and management of the hotel. It will be run in about the same style as before (but at about $190.00 per night) with an obvious link to Cristals Night Club. Leno's idea is to have the guests come to the night club and choose a companion.

He figures, el Bohiem and Blackbeards are behind the bad publicity. He has paid the down payment and put over $150,000.00 in the construction of the wall, new bar, kitchen and 3 more rooms. So he has lots to loose if he is blocked. I don't think his business plan will work.

Sunset on the Field of Dreams hotel and the the loss of my investment.

When Leno defaulted on the purchase of the hotel Alberto wanted me to return and manage it again. At 66 years of age I didn't want to work 24/7 again. I had enought to do with managing the condos Alberto gave me and two other hotel investors in liew of the money owed by Leno from the sale.

I had two units and a small restaurant/bar in the condos. I rented my second unit and collected the rent for the owners of the other six units. I made monthly deposits in to their accounts at Alberto's investment company, Anoeca. I had a nice income from the restaurant, rent from my second unit and $200 dollars a month from Anoeca for the money left over from the hotel sale on deposit there.

Alberto had been doing well for 22 years and paying his investors a good return on the money they had on deposit with Anoeca. In 2007/8 and 9 he was getting a lot of money from Canada, the States and Europe because of the downturn in the economy. His company doubled in investment dollars from 17 million to 35 million.

He grew so fast he didn't have good places to put the money so he bought property thinking it would be worth more in the next year and he could roll it over for a profit. It didn't happen and to pay his investors their monthly interest payments he used up all his cash reserves.

Over the next couple of years 2010 and 11 he started to mortgage some of the land not wanting to sell at a loss. The values continued to drop and by 2012 his company was close to banrupt. He started to default on his payments to his investors and the banks as well.

In December 2012 I found out he had sold the condo complex out from under us and seeing the hand writting on the wall I moved out in 2013 before I was evicted. I lost my two condo units, my restaurant and $30,000us that was on deposit in Anoeca.

Alberto didn't live an extravient lifestyle and just made bad investments with all the new money. The real crook was a guy working for his company that kept incouraging people to invest when he knew the ship was on the rocks. This was so he'd get has commissions even when he knew they would loose their money.
